Irezumi/ klimt/ the kiss/ Shunga/

Irezumi, the traditional Japanese tattoo,  meets early 20th century European art in Senju's  painting "Kuchidzuke (kiss)". This piece is an homage to Gustav Klimt's world famous and iconic Symbolist painting " The Kiss" . It shows two female lovers in a sensual embrace. Senju has visited this theme on numerous occasions before, resulting in some of his most recognized artworks.

The "Irezumi Bijinga" series of paintings is a collection of beautiful women adorned with Irezumi tattoos. For this project,  Senju is drawing not only on his painting skills and his more than 20 years of deep studies of Japanese culture and art.
