Irezumi / Japanese Tattoo / Jorōgumo

In Japanese folklore and myth, the Earth Spider, Jorōgumo is a recurring theme. It appears both as a fearsome and demonic monster possessing heroes and rulers, and also as a man-eating monster in the disguise of a young and beautiful woman. Using her beauty, she lures the men into her nest and then devours them. In Irezumi, the traditional Japanese tattoo, the Jorōgumo is often depicted as a large and hairy spider with the head of a woman. In this painting, Senju chose invokes a new way of expressing this traditional tattoo theme. By letting the woman in the painting wear an Irezumi tattoo consisting of nothing but cobweb, falling momiji (autumn leaves) and a single skull, she effectively becomes the Jorōgumo. The reflection of her beautiful face in the kagami (mirror) is luring the her unsuspecting prey to their doom.

The “Irezumi Bijinga” series of paintings is a collection of beautiful women adorned with Irezumi tattoos. For this project,  Senju is drawing not only on his painting skills and his more than 20 years of deep studies of Japanese culture and art. He also lets his more than 30 years experience as a tattoo artist come into play. To see another Senju print that would match this, please go here
