irezumi / Japanese tattoo / hannya
One of the more famous, and perhaps one of the more misunderstood, irezumi designs, is the Hannya Noh mask. Since centuries, the visage of Hannya has been used to portray women in emotional distress, often driven by rage or anger due to jealousy or other psychological states. The mask shows a woman suffering internally and spiritually. Perhaps she is betrayed, cheated on or someone has taken or killed her children? The many nuances of mental suffering within the expression of this terrifying, yet very sad wooden mask, makes it ideal as a powerful design for traditional Japanese tattoos. It is said that one should incorporate some kind of Japanese Buddhist design somewhere on the body when using the Hannya, as not to invite the rage hidden within the mask.
