Art Nouveau/ Mucha/ Shunga
During the second half of the 19th century, Japan opened up to the West after more than 250 years in isolation. What followed was a veritable tsunami of Japanese art, never before seen in the West, that came crashing into the stagnated European art world. This event ushered in an era of new creativity that blessed us with timeless beauty in the form of , amongst others, Impressionism and Art Nouveau. This piece is an homage to Alphonse Muchat’s beautiful and famous  Art Nouveau posters  and paintings.
The study of both Western and Japanese art at the end of the 1800s is an inspiring and energizing pursuit, and Senju has brushed on the genre of “Nouveau Japonisme” in earlier works. As he continues down the path of his immersion in Japanese art, culture and history, especially Irezumi and Shunga, a fusion between these styles and Art Nouveau seems like a natural evolution. It is a thrilling experience to try to decipher the impact made by Japanese art on Art Nouveau and other late 19th century art movements, and only beautiful things can come out of these studies.
